Your Life Story: Getting Started

What do you want the next generation to read about you?

The richest inheritance we can pass on to the next generation is our life experience. If you have read the Bible either from a spiritual or historical perspective, one of the first things that will leap off the pages is that imperfect people – with all their "stuff" made history and both their blessings and their curses were passed down to the next generation.

Help, I'm not that good of a writer!!!

We're going to help you preserve your own life experiences in small bite-size pieces. Many times the first thing a person will think when they consider recording their life story is, "I don't have enough time!" or "I'm not that good of a writer!" or "My life isn't where I want it to be yet!"

You're just where you need to be in life, right now! If you were perfect or had everything in place and together, no one would have anything to learn from you….

Your life experience is all you  need!

People love stories! They especially love to hear of stories where the main character is not perfect, even stories where the characters are flawed and have to overcome obstacles. No one expects perfection or even trusts perfection. We all came out of the same mold, more or less! As you share your story people are going to identify with you, if you are real, and cheer you on!

We're going to show you how to record your stories in various media formats. We'll give you a variety of ideas and you decide which ones fit you!

While this is not therapy, most people do find this process therapeutic. Many people find they need to talk things out as they go along, especially when it comes to sharing a "tough story".

No worries – we'll walk you through that, if and when the time comes!

We're also going to show you how to preserve your stories, photos, videos, and anything else you want to pass down to your generations. Remember, we're putting on 1000+ year eyeglasses here! God says the blessings of the parents go down 1000 generations! Many people are walking around today without any idea of all the blessings they may be missing out on, simply because the stories died along with their parents and grandparents. Most of us don't have a good idea of who our ancestors really are!

The Life Expectancy for CD's and DVD's – even Books – is too low trust our valuable treasures!

CD's and DVD's have a life expectancy of about 20-years (if they are well taken care of). Books have a little longer life expectancy, but all those photo albums, baby books, and memoirs… who will hold onto them? Will they truly be shared and cherished for many generations?

What about the natural disasters that occur from time to time? We are going to show you how to preserve your treasures in such a way that all generations after you will have access to your life story! There's never been such a time as this for recording our life stories!

I anticipate the "Life Story Kit" to be available from the publisher in mid-October, so as you are waiting, now is a great time to open some internet accounts, begin collecting the photos you want to go into this treasury, and begin thinking of which stories you want to include. We're going to be sharing some sample interview questions and dialogue to help get the creative juices flowing!

I'll also be sharing some examples so you can glean from other peoples' contributions.

So here you go:

Assignment #1: Open a free account with Smilebox. You'll have hundreds of multimedia options, including graphics, music, adding video and photos, and creating a storyline to go with your photos. You'll be amazed at how quickly you can put together a Smilebox creation!

I've literally been able to put together my very first Smilebox video in 5-minutes! The free version works wonderfully, and if you want to get more involved and experience all the bells and whistles there is a nominal annual fee that allows you access to the thrills and frills. You have the opportunity to convert your creation into a DVD (which can in turn be loaded into your computer's hard drive). You will have both an internet and a hard copy of your video. Choose from hundreds of templates that will allow you to create videos, invitations, cards, etc.

Life Story writing comes from your heart. You're going to be amazed at how simple it is to begin recording the events of your lives.  So have fun, and stay tuned for our next tip!

Have fun and enjoy!
