Laundry

Laundry

By: Susan Deborah Schiller

Her chubby cheeks dimple in a wide smile as orange Popsicle goo drips down her chin and all over her sunsuit. Seventeen months old and life has no limits except for the ones I must enforce near the busy road in front of our house. Her sister, nearly three-years old, is the picture of food-friendly perfection. With quick, delicate licks, her tongue catches her cherry Popscicle's quickly melting drips in the record heat of July 1987.

I owe a debt of gratitude to the creator of these colorful ice treats, as I now have purchased about eight minutes of freedom to hang three loads of wash on the clothesline! My bulging abdomen is heavy with our third child who is due to be born in a few days. One whole line is completely full of cloth diapers and for the thousandth time I wonder if there will ever come a day when i'm not feeding, clothing, laundering, bathing and wiping up messes.

I memorize the moment, like a mental photograph, because I know these busy days will fade away soon enough. I envision myself as a great-grandmother surrounded by babies, toddlers, little ones and big ones, and I make a mental note to stock my freezer with ice pops. Eight delicious minutes of freedom…. priceless… but not as priceless as their smiles. 🙂

Do you have mental photographs, too… indelibly embedded in your heart?

Anything involving my son is in my mind.  Especially more now since he is getting older (2 years is a wonderful age) and because it took us 5 years to have him.

What a joy, Michelle, to enjoy your child! I always thought every age was my favorite age, even now that they are in their twenties 🙂

Thanks so much coming by today!

My memories of Laudry are not as poetic as yours 🙂 But I did forget that the Nappy Washing (as we call diapers) was the worst part of it. I grew up with 5 younger sisters and I did plenty of it. And then of course my own children, at least I had a wasing machine.

I like the word, “nappy” – it sounds like “happy” 🙂

Thank God for washing machines!

What a beautiful picture you paint of that day. I am trying to do that now- take mental pictures. Capture smells and feelings. Just fabulous. And I might even start being thankful for those popsicles:) So very glad to have stopped by your blog today! Happy Friday, Sister.

Happy Friday to you, too, Lauren – your children must be little, still? Enjoy those precious moments 🙂

What a fantastic memory.  For me it brought back my own memories of eating those ice pops in the Indiana heat while visiting my dad for the summer.  I love the idea of just free writing…it is such a cathartic experience.  Thank you for sharing.

Hi Mackie,

You’re right – I look forward to Fridays because “free writing” is fun. It helps to know you have a reasonable time limit that pretty much everyone can do. Maybe you can join us sometime. Have a great weekend, Mackie! 🙂

Hi Susan,

Very interesting, I do have my own mental photographs of where I could be in the future I think we all have these at times.
