Flower Power

The Daily Practice….

Beauty May Save the World

By: Susan Deborah Schiller

From the "Daily Practice" of encountering beauty in ordinary things.

I woke up one morning with the thought that God wanted to surprise me with the joy of one single dandelion blossoming in the grass. So I grabbed my camera and got down on my hands and knees to see what God might say.

Can there be beauty and joy in an ordinary dandelion – the weed that homeowners poison and root out?

"Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it." – Confucius

Dandelions are a rich source of nutrients, dense in antioxidants and phytonutrients – the stuff you pay dearly for in health food stores. The leaves, flowers, and roots of dandelions are all edible and beneficial.

Dandelions slow the rate of cancer growth, help regulate blood sugar, are high in fiber and potassium, which help regulate blood pressure. Dandelions help to lower bad cholesterol while fighting off bacteria and fungi.

Eating dandelions helps to remove toxins and reestablish electrolyte balance. This is good for your liver. It helps your kidneys and urinary system by filtering out excess water, salts, and pesty microbes.

What child does not enjoy picking dandelions? Adults can make dandelion wine and drink the health benefits. But most of us prefer to eradicate our yards of the flower-power right under our noses. And then we go to the health food store to buy the manufactured equivalent at exorbitant retail prices.

Maybe this is what God wanted me to see and take notice of – that healing is meant to be FREE and ABUNDANT and right under our noses.

"Dryness promotes the formation of flower buds…flowering is, after all, not an aesthetic contribution, but a survival mechanism." – Ann Haymond Zwinger

I'm glad I stopped to take notice, to listen, and to remember. This daily practice is still fairly new to me. It makes me happy! And happiness brings heaven to earth!

Be you. Live free. Tell your story!
